ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS

As responsible stewards of the environment, shipowners and shipbuilders must be mindful of domestic, international and industry environmental requirements. Many environmental regulations impact maritime transportation and the marine offshore industry.

ABS is the shipping industry’s top resource for information on regulations and the specifics needed to ensure cost-effective regulatory compliance. The ABS Environmental Performance team identifies and supports the implementation of new technologies to ensure compliant operations for the marine and offshore industries.

The Basics of Environmental Regulations

  • International, regional and national regulations all incorporate environmental requirements.
  • The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) covers six areas of ship pollutants: oil, noxious liquid substances in bulk, harmful substances in package forms, sewage, garbage and air emissions from ships.
  • IMO continues to develop and adopt rules on various topics, including ballast water, biofouling, market-based measures and ship-radiated noise.

THE Bottom Line for Environmental Performance

Whether a company needs clarification of regulations for air quality, ballast water, bilge water, underwater radiated noise or solid waste, the ABS Environmental Performance team can assist vessels with optimum compliance options.
