ABS has been providing world-class classification services and technical solutions to the marine industries in Canada for more than 130 years.
Today, led by an experienced management team based in Ottawa, we operate from coast to coast, supporting our clients and members on board vessels, at shipyards, manufacturing facilities and associated management offices.
From our Vancouver office, which was first established in 1880, we serve the west coast, including Vancouver Island and the ports to the north; from our Toronto office we cover the southern Ontario manufacturing base and the vital Great Lakes shipping region.
ABS has surveyors based in Montreal and Quebec City to attend to vessels trading on the St. Lawrence River system, as well as the many regional equipment vendors that supply the industry; Atlantic Canada is served by a team of qualified personnel in Saint John, New Brunswick, and St. John’s, Newfoundland, who respond to the technical needs of the maritime community across the Maritime Provinces.
Leveraging a Global Network
We draw upon our global network of industry relationships and technical specialists to support clients and members who trade internationally, or who are purchasing materials, equipment or services from abroad. As an internationally recognised technology leader, this includes the tools, systems and services developed at any of our six technology centres located in the Americas, Europe and Asia.
ABS currently supports the owners and operators of passenger ferries, bulk carriers, oil tankers, container ships, accommodation vessels, special purpose construction and maintenance vessels, tugs, barges, offshore-support vessels, as well as drilling rigs and the associated production installations across Canada.
Beyond Classification, we pride ourselves on being a trusted advisor to industry and governments. ABS offers certification services on behalf of many of the world’s flag administrations; we also advise on regulatory compliance with the latest wave of regulations, and highlight those on the horizon.
ABS is a Recognized Organization under the Transport Canada Delegated Statutory Inspection Program, offering certification for vessels with Canadian registry. Under Canadian regulations, ABS also has the status of Certifying Authority to provide Certificates of Fitness for offshore oil and gas projects off the coasts of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and any other areas across Canada that fall under the jurisdiction of the National Energy Board.
In line with our global commitment to research and development, ABS is engaged in a comprehensive national program of technical development, educational sponsorship and joint-industry projects aimed at supporting the continuous improvement of marine safety and performance. This includes the activities currently being conducted at our Harsh Environment Technology Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where we work to improve industry understanding of the effects of extreme cold weather and ice on high-value marine assets.
With more than 200 million gross tons under ABS class, our global team of surveyors, engineers and technical specialist are prepared to help with any project, any time, any place.
No other classification society has the experience or knowledge of ABS in the offshore energy sector. We are committed to helping owners and operators safely enter new frontiers.
