ABS participated at Nor-Shipping in Oslo, Norway, May 30 – June 2. As one of the leading international maritime events it was a key week for the maritime sector to meet and discuss current and future industry trends.
ABS started the week with a press conference on “Connecting the shipping industry to the future”, briefing the press on how ABS is applying new technologies to survey, engineering and class portfolio services. From wearables and drones to mobile apps and cybersecurity, ABS shared insights on how it is helping clients navigate disruptive technologies and leading class into the future.
ABS presented on the future of classification through advanced inspection technologies at its stand during the week, giving many visitors a look into the future of classification and the role that wearable’s and drones will play.
The ABS-hosted disruptive panel on May 31 allowed a lively and informative discussion on “What issues are ripe for innovative solutions?” The session panelists discussed new technologies, new attitudes and the upheaval that will bring the old-world shipping model to a close and what sort of a model will replace it.
Jan Otto de Kat, ABS Technical Director of Energy Efficiency and Vessel Performance, and fellow panelists Colin Rawlins, V Group (Germany) M.D.; Joern Springer, Hapag Lloyd Senior Director, Fleet Support Center and Teus van Beek, Wärtsilä General Manager Market Innovation, brought an invaluable cross section on knowledge and insight to the session.
The U.S. Embassy in Oslo hosted a disruptive panel session on “Maritime Cybersecurity: Risks, Resilience and Strategies for Defense in Depth.” The session was moderated by Julian Bray, TradeWinds Editor, with Rear Admiral Paul F. Thomas, USCG Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy; John Titmus, Crowdstrike Director EMEA and Paul Walters, ABS Global Director CyberSafety, providing three views on cybersecurity and creating cyber-resilience.
Integral to ABS Nor-Shipping participation is ABS support for the AMVER Awards, held at the U.S. Embassy Residence in Oslo on the May 31. ABS would like to congratulate all the Norwegian Shipping Companies who received awards, they should feel very proud of the efforts their company and crews have made to ensure the safety of life at sea.
