Case Study: Applying 3D Models for Class Approval

Israel Shipyards Ltd. (ISL) was seeking to apply new tools and technology to improve the class design review process by using 3D models instead of traditional 2D drawings on its 45-meter, multi-mission offshore patrol vessel (OPV). ISL turned to ABS to help streamline the approval workflow process for class to help improve efficiency and advance safety.

BRINGING 3D INNOVATION TO CLASS

Vessel designers and shipyards are increasingly looking for ways to apply digital tools to support efficiency gains.

At ABS, advances in technology and 3D modeling techniques now enable one, end-to-end project model – helping designers achieve a time savings of up to 10-25% with the elimination of 2D, paper-based drawings.

With the capability and experience to fully support 3D model-based engineering plan review and survey, ABS continues to lead the way in the development of digital class by leveraging data and digital technologies to deliver operational efficiencies and enhanced safety for the industry.

Through a series of joint development projects and pilots with major shipyards and designers, ABS has demonstrated how it can support the design, review, and survey during ship construction using technology-agnostic 3D models in place of 2D drawings.

ABS has developed a Best Practices Document, available upon request, that outlines:

  •          How our personalized 3D model-based review process works
  •          Information on different CAD software
  •          CAD interoperability considerations
  •          Relevant supporting documents
  •          The model transfer procedure
  •          Lessons learned

ABS INDUSTRY PARNERSHIPS BRING 3D INNOVATION TO CLASS

ABS First in Industry to Accept 3D Models for Class Surveys
  • ABS completed a pilot project with San Diego-based NASSCO using 3D digital models instead of traditional 2D drawings for the simulation of new construction surveys on several steel blocks.
SDARI and ABS Pioneer 3D Model-Based Class
  • ABS and the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) signed a JDP to develop a process for ingesting SDARI 3D models into class software to allow 3D model-based reviews and accommodate fully digital design methods.
ABS and SHI Target End-to-End 3D Model-Based Class Process
  • ABS and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) are working together to deliver Korea’s first end-to-end 3D model-based class process, encompassing engineering and survey of an LNG carrier.
