If I want to certify my satellite offices, what should I do?
ABS provides two main approaches to certifying satellite offices. To determine which certification method provides the best fit for the service supplier, consider where global services are performed, which quality certification schemes are in place (ISO 9001, API Q1/Q2, etc.) or are being planned for implementation, and how many facilities will be impacted.
1. Individual Facility Certification is best for smaller companies (less than five locations), which do not share a common central quality certification and operate independently from one another (no centrally controlled processes or policies). Certification is carried out based on a scheduled three-year audit renewal cycle.
2. Home Office Scheme provides comprehensive control over services performed for a firm that has multiple global facilities (typically five or more). The service firm will have a robust quality program in place, ISO 9001 or equivalent, and processes will apply across all entities under the home office. Audits are performed for the main office selected and two to three satellites every year. All facilities will be audited within the three-year cycle on a rotation basis. This option reduces costs and the level of effort compared to individual audits and allows for interchangeable use of service and personnel assets depending on the services performed.
What is the difference between initial and renewal certification?
An initial certification is the process required when a service supplier first applies for ABS certification. This process typically involves reviewing documentation, including procedures and personnel training records. This is followed by a practical demonstration performed in the presence of an attending ABS surveyor. A renewal certification is required every three years to maintain one’s class certificate.
