ABS recently hosted members of the Hong Kong shipping community at events arranged to discuss issues that affect the shipping sector. From 3 March to 11 March, the ABS Hong Kong office conducted a series of activities, including the ABS Hong Kong Technical Committee Meeting, a dinner with ABS technical specialists and face-to-face meetings with more than 20 ABS clients. Both the Hong Kong shipping community and ABS have benefitted from the interactive dialogue and intense week.

More than 20 participants attended the ABS Hong Kong Technical Committee Meeting on 8 March, where the agenda included a Committee Overview and Market Outlook, Proposed Rule Changes for Hulls, Machinery, and Survey as well as New Rules/Guides/Guidance Notes/Notations. ABS technical specialists presented views on hot topics such as NOx Tier III compliance and accidents onboard cargo ships. An invited representative from Gard P&I Club contributed to the event with a presentation that explained the interaction between P&I (protection and indemnity) and Class.

The ABS Hong Kong Technical Committee was formed in 2015 to promote the exchange of technical views on ABS Rules and evolving industry challenges. The annual meeting also has become an effective platform for ABS to explore the needs of Hong Kong Shipping Industry.

In addition to the Technical Committee Meeting, ABS hosted a dinner attended by clients and ABS technical specialists, creating an informal atmosphere for continued discussion on shipping issues. Hosting this event is one of the ways ABS Hong Kong identifies the areas where ABS can invest in research and development related to innovative technological advances to support our members, clients and the local shipping community.
