ABS and MARTECMA Lead Industry Workshop Addressing Key Challenges for Ballast Water Management Systems
ABS recently co-hosted a workshop with Athens-based Marine Technical Managers Association (MARTECMA), focused on the challenges and experiences of owners in installing and operating ballast water management systems. To help drive the discussion, participants were surveyed before the event on the types of technologies they have deployed in their fleets and the performance of those technologies. Aggregated results allowed common issues – as well as any outliers – to be identified.
During the workshop, leaders and attendees reviewed the best practices that support successful installations, exploring both common and unique challenges resulting from different applied technologies, various ship types and sizes, operational and environmental conditions, operating frequency, crew competencies and BWM system maintenance requirements.
By hosting workshops like this and a similar event held in Houston in April 2017, ABS provides industry a platform to explore the challenges associated with incorporating new technologies and apply best practices that support safer and more sustainable fleet operations.
