CSDC Leverages ABS Technical Services to Develop a New Generation of Container

CSDC Tech Services Silk Road

A growing trend in the maritime industry is the development of vessel designs optimized to particular operating routes and profiles with an eye towards future regulatory requirements. This lifecycle approach in the early phases of project development allows for a more “future proof” concept that will ideally minimize regulatory impacts and compliance costs over the entire service life of the vessel.

With this concept in mind, China Ship & Design Center (CSDC) recently undertook an effort to develop a next-generation container ship optimized to the “Maritime Silk Road.” To support this effort CSDC entered into a Joint Development Project (JDP) with leading international classification society ABS.

The role of ABS in this effort is to provide advisory services on classification issues and technical advice in areas that promote efficiency, optimized performance, and environmental stewardship. This includes analysis of future regulatory and operational trends, port capabilities, and the integration of innovative technologies and concepts.

By engaging ABS, CSDC is leveraging a trusted technical advisor. The technical evaluations conducted by ABS will allow for more informed decisions during CSDC’s design process. By better understanding the near and long term operational and regulatory environment, along with available technical solutions and potential impact on vessel safety, CSDC can develop a design that best meets the needs of its intended service.

The Belt and Road Initiative, a reference to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, aims to promote the connectivity of the Asian, European and African continents and their adjacent seas. This includes establishing and strengthening partnerships among the countries along the Belt and Road, setting up multi-tiered and composite connectivity networks, and realizing diversified, independent, balanced and sustainable development in these countries.

ABS and CSDC have a long and established history of cooperation in developing innovative concepts and technologies for the maritime industry. Earlier this year, ABS granted Approval in Principle for a CSDC Spar floating production installation.
