ABS Joint China National & Hong Kong SAR Committee Meeting

 

ABS hosted its Joint China National & Hong Kong SAR Committee Meeting in Sanya on September 20th to discuss ABS achievements and the industry outlook with more than 70 committee members and representatives including shipowners, designers and shipbuilders.

Tony Nassif, ABS Executive Vice President & COO, opened the meeting by introducing ABS’ Safety Performance in recent years, which includes more than two years without a lost time incident. He also gave an overview of significant issues facing the shipping industry, such as decarbonization, digitization, cyber security and safety. Furthermore, Nassif provided an explanation of the IMO’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy. He focused on the importance of data analytics, the impact of technology on current ships, and new technology to watch.

Eric Kleess, ABS Eastern Hemisphere Senior Vice President, briefed the committee on ABS business activity in the Greater China area and Hong Kong. Kleess was confident that ABS will continue to add value to the Chinese shipbuilding and shipping industry and strengthen its partnership with the industry in the future.

ABS specialists from Houston and Athens discussed various topics of industry interest including the journey to 2050, digital technologies and future fuels. The meeting provided a platform for committee members to share their insights about the industry.

Nassif closed the meeting with an outlook of the global shipping and shipbuilding industries. He highlighted world trade growth, the performance of the offshore energy and marine sectors, and the reshaping of shipbuilding and shipping through consolidation and bankruptcy.
