ABS Hosts Seminar in Dubai on Regulatory Updates for Shipowners and Operators

Nearly 60 participants from the marine and offshore industries joined ABS in Dubai on April 18th to hear about environmental compliance issues, sustainable marine operations, and technology advancements that improve asset performance.

The event was led by ABS Vice President of Technology, Gareth Burton where he provided an update on the environmental regulatory landscape highlighting the current & upcoming requirements, such as air emission requirements including the IMO 2020 global sulphur cap, ballast water management systems requirements, and key emerging topics such as biofouling and underwater noise.

He also explored the topic of sustainability and the transition into the de-carbonization of shipping. Additionally, he touched upon the importance of harnessing digital technologies and innovation to meet 2030 and 2050 decarbonization objectives.

In Burton’s second presentation he addressed emerging technology trends in the marine and offshore industries covering topics such as digitalization, smart technologies and how a vessel’s data can be utilized to optimize performance, condition-based class, advanced inspection technologies, and virtual vessels.   

Joe Woods, ABS Advanced Solutions Vice President of Business Development, introduced ABS Advanced Solutions services highlighting how Cyber Security, Advanced Engineering, and Enterprise Asset Management services can improve asset reliability and performance.

Following the presentations, the attendees exchanged their views on the implementation of regulatory requirements and smart shipping.
