ABS-hosted Seminars in Fuzhou Spotlights EU MRV Compliance

ABS hosted a half-day seminar in Fuzhou on March 14 to address various topics, such as European Union (EU) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) compliance, Ballast Water Management, Global Sulphur Cap 2020 and Regulatory Updates. The seminars attracted more than 40 representatives from Fujian shipowners and operators participating.

The growing attention to EU MRV made it one of the most popular topics in the seminars. With increased scrutiny on greenhouse gas emissions at the International Maritime Organization and on regional levels, new emissions requirements are stricter. Central to the EU MRV requirements are key deadlines for ships travelling to, from and between EU ports to develop an emissions monitoring plan, implement the plan and submit a report that is verified by an independent third party.

As the first class society to earn EU MRV accreditation, ABS not only has dedicated Conformity Assessment Body, but also is active in industry and regulatory engagement, which enables ABS to have a better position to assist the industry in MRV compliance. During the seminars, representative from ABS Greater China Division introduced ABS MRV Solution that includes an assessment of monitoring plans, confirmation of reported information and verification of emission reports. ABS also offers additional support through its software platform ABS Nautical Systems (NS) that captures, manages and reports CO2 emissions.

ABS also introduced its extensive experience in MRV compliance. In 2014-2015, ABS coordinated an industry project with ship owners to understand the most effective path to compliance. Furthermore, ABS has participated in the European Sustainable Shipping Forum (ESSF), which plays an important role in EU MRV Implementation. In addition, ABS has been contracted by major shipping companies for assessments, and has regular communication with owners, managers and operators via seminars and circulars.

Following the presentations, the attendees exchanged their views on EU MRV, Ballast Water Management, Sulfur emission and regulatory updates with ABS representatives. The seminar has received positive feedback by shipowners and operations from Fujian area.
