The third ABS Hellenic Technical Committee meeting took place on November 21st at The Margi Hotel outside of Athens, Greece. More than 40 distinguished members of the maritime industry and other sectors participated in the lively workshop.

Two guest speakers spoke during the meeting. Daniel Constantinis, CEO of EM&I UK, discussed cost savings through digitization and robotic inspections. Dimos Moratis, Managing Director of OE Greece, spoke on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for marine inspections. These presentations shed light on state-of-the-art technologies as well as the limits of such advanced technologies at this time.

The meeting also had a live drone exhibit with real-time image transmissions to demonstrate the technology and mechanical principles of UAVs. The committee members examined nondestructive testing such as laser thickness measurements, remote inspections and drone applications.

During the afternoon session, the Hellenic Technical Committee discussed proposed ABS Rule changes and touched on topics including cyber security, scrubbers, vendor type approval and main engine and overall vessel performance. Members also provided feedback related to third-party regulatory bodies such as IACS, the IMO, etc.

Dr. Chris Leontopoulos, the Hellenic Technical Committee Chairman and ABS Global Ship Systems Center Director, closed the meeting and thanked all members for their constructive and rewarding participation. To learn more about technical innovation at ABS, please visit here.
