Even in a challenging market, the FPSO sector is seeing growth, and spending is continuing. It is a dynamic segment of the offshore industry, and the work ABS is doing is creating ways to improve operations.
ABS is a leader in offshore asset classification and is at the forefront of FPSO solutions. ABS classed the industry’s first floating production system and the first FPSO to work in U.S. waters. Today, ABS is the global market leader in floating production unit classification.
FPSO units have been used in the offshore industry for many years and have become the production unit of choice in a number of regions, including Brazil. Among the units on the long list of active ABS-classed floaters are many of the FPSOs in the Petrobras fleet that will produce the country’s presalt fields.
In 2Q 2015, ABS published its latest guidance on floating production units, the ABS Guidance Notes on Life Extension Methodology for Floating Production Installations. This document provides guidelines for assessing units that are nearing the end of their intended period of operation. ABS engineers developed this methodology for asset owners that are evaluating their floating production units to determine if they can remain on site beyond originally estimated field life to continue producing hydrocarbons as intended.
ABS continuously evaluates and updates guidance and creates new guides when they are merited by industry.
When older units are being evaluated for continuing service or new designs are introduced, it is a strategic advantage to get support from ABS, a classification society that has the experience, knowledge and record of innovation to FPSOs.
