ABS Greater China Division Learning Center Spotlights LNG Carrier New Construction

Girish Sehgal, Principal Speaker, LNG Senior Advisor, ABS Greater China Division

To embrace the opportunity of the increasing LNG transportation driven by both environmental compliance and potential fuel cost savings, LNG carriers have become one of the highest profile vessel types in Chinese shipyards. As a part of ABS’ global training effort to help industry gain a better understanding of LNG for marine applications, the ABS Greater China Division recently carried out a five-day training session discussing LNG-fueled vessels and LNG carrier construction, which attracted nearly 70 trainees to the course.

The objective of the training was to acquaint participants with the recent uptake of interest in using LNG as a fuel for ship propulsion and provide the most up-to-date developments on fuel systems and internal combustion engines to accommodate this new trend. In addition, the training also helped participants understand LNG carrier structural design and construction, cargo containment installation and the operational and safety aspects of transporting LNG cargoes by sea. Through an invaluable blend of theoretical knowledge and practical understanding, the training was welcomed by the participants who considered the course as a good way to learn new skills and meet their job requirements.

With more than 50 years of experience classing gas carriers, ABS has gained a reputation for its pioneering technical work with gas transport. Among many of ABS’ firsts are the first ship with a Technigaz system, the first ship with a Gaz Transport (GTT) system, the first ship delivered with TG MK Ⅲ, the first membrane ship delivered with cargo capacity of 133,000 m3, the first purpose-built LNG carrier and the first ice-class LNG carrier. Recently ABS has been chosen to class the world’s first CNG project in China, which is more evidence of ABS’ leading position in the gas sector.

Combined with its extensive practical and technical experience in LNG shipping, ABS is dedicated to promoting the development of the China LNG transportation industry. The ABS Greater China Division Learning Center began training focused on LNG carrier new construction to support the needs of Chinese shipyards as they transitioned to this high-tech sector in 2012. As of March 2015, more than 140 trainees including shipbuilders, authorities and designers have attended this course.

The next course on LNG New Construction is scheduled for the first week of June.
