ABS & Mawei Shipbuilding Sign Contract for 100th Vessel

After more than 10 years of cooperation, ABS and Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding Ltd. have signed a class contract for their one hundredth vessel marking a new level of the partnership for both parties.

As one of the oldest shipyards in China, Mawei Shipbuilding has a strong legacy rooted in its historical culture, but also has a spirit of innovation as it proactively transforms with the offshore industry. Since its founding in 1862, ABS has developed extensive experience in offshore classification services, which has laid a solid foundation for a mutually beneficial cooperation between Mawei Shipbuilding and ABS.

At the 100 Vessels Commemoration Ceremony held in Fuzhou China on 28 March, Eric Kleess, ABS Greater China Division President and COO and Zhang Zhitong, Chairman of Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding Ltd. signed a classification contract for a compact semisubmersible to receive the DPS-3 notation and have accommodations for 520 people. The unit will meet the highest standards for accommodation service in the offshore industry.

ABS has worked with shipyards in the Fujian Province of China for almost 25 years. The cooperation between ABS and Mawei Shipyard began in 2003 with the construction of a 3,000-ton product oil carrier. Through the close collaboration, ABS has been a partner in building the reputation of Mawei Shipyard’s competence in developing complex vessel types including state-of-the-art offshore support vessels, compact semisubmersibles, a diving support vessel and the recently contracted world’s first subsea mining vessel.

Of the 100 vessels in which Mawei Shipbuilding and ABS have cooperated, 43 have been 87-meter electric-driven platform supply vessels (PSVs). ABS, Mawei Shipyard and other parties have successfully delivered 32 electric-driven PSVs. This particular vessel type is the first electric-driven vessel built by Mawei Shipyard.
