Environmental Challenges: The Technology Solution
ABS’ Asset Performance Management group established a strong presence in a joint panel presentation beside the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Chamber of America representative, Kathy Metcalf. Challenging domestic and international environmental regulations were individually addressed, along with their implementation timelines. Along the way, new technologies and their uptake by the commercial shipping industry were given a comprehensive review.
Senior Vice President, Asset Performance Management Howard Fireman elaborated on options for vessel owners seeking to tackle aquatic pollution given the varying ballast water management regulatory standards across global regions. Technology considerations in conjunction with a ship’s operational profile were emphasized as important criteria for selecting a ballast water management system (BWMS). A detailed analysis on how the resulting macro picture can potentially affect a vessel’s international trade was given.
World economy trends, transport demand and exhaust emission regulations applicable to the marine industry were highlighted as important factors in a shipowner’s strategy to cope with regional and IMO-established air pollution requirements. The two milestone dates of 2015, when the 0.1% sulfur limit will be enforced in the ECAs, and 2020 or 2025 when the 0.5% global sulfur limit on fuel will become effective, were the ‘waypoints’ directing a results-oriented, risk-based approach of emissions abatement compliance discussion.
ABS successfully communicated its enthusiasm to working closely with owners, operators, shipyards and equipment providers around the world to better understand the drivers that will influence technology choices in the time periods leading up to regulatory compliance.
Regardless of where technology and regulation lead, ABS will always maintain focus on the security of life, property and the natural environment.
