ABS Adds Value to Chinese Shipbuilding, Shipping Industry

On 26-27 September 2016, the 2016 ABS Joint China National & Hong Kong SAR Committee Meeting took place in Hangzhou, China, convening approximately 130 executives and leaders representing major shipowners, design institutions, and shipbuilders across mainland China and Hong Kong.

“Our growing fleet and strong orderbook demonstrate industry recognition of ABS,” said ABS Executive Vice President and COO Tony Nassif. “We have maintained a leading position in all major shipbuilding countries and major ship owning markets.” Nassif took the opportunity at the meeting to talk about ABS FutureClassTM, explaining, “With a clear vision for the future direction, we can see that in the data centric future, class will be wider and deeper to be adaptive to changing business environment. I believe ABS FutureClassTM will be able to improve the class model and help reduce clients’ risks.”

Serving the world’s largest shipbuilding nation, the ABS Greater China Division has worked closely to develop broad cooperation with the Chinese shipbuilding and shipping industry. During the meeting, Eric Kleess, ABS Greater China Division (GCD) President and COO, talked about significant activities and developments in China. “Leveraging our ability to provide innovative and practical solutions has allowed ABS to become a preferred classification society in China for novel concept and state-of-the-art projects, including the world’s first CNG carrier, the world’s largest LEG carrier, 45,000 cubic meter Type A LNG/LEG Carrier, and 174,000 cubic meter LNG FSRU.”

Last February, ABS created a new organization to centralize global marine activities, led by ABS Executive Vice President of Global Marine Kirsi Tikka. The focus of this new organization is to deliver improved client services, Tikka told Committee members. “ABS is using a holistic approach to support members and clients worldwide in areas of energy efficiency, environmental compliance, operational performance, and gas solutions, addressing the most pressing challenges to the industry,” she said.
