ABS Hosts 2016 China Technical Committee Meeting in Yunnan
ABS’ Greater China Division (GCD) hosted its annual China Technical Committee Meeting in Kunming, Yunnan, China, in early March, convening more than 60 technical experts from shipbuilders, designers, and ship owners all over China. The objective in gathering this committee of local experts was to discuss ABS Rule changes.
As one of ABS core values, safety is the cornerstone of developing and refining ABS Rules and Standards. Rule development is driven by technology, applied in the context of ABS’ mission to promote the security of life and property and preserve the natural environment. The China Technical Committee Meeting is one of many meetings held around the world to engage industry in discussions that will help ABS in the Rule development process.
The proposed Rule changes reviewed and discussed by the ABS China Technical Committee will enhance the safety of construction of marine and offshore assets.
ABS GCD Vice President of Engineering Bill Shi hosted the committee, which was made up of technical experts from China’s marine and offshore industries. Participants provided constructive comments on proposed changes, including those impacting structures, materials, mechanical and electrical systems, and field survey, particularly focusing on those that will affect offshore units.
In acknowledging the contributions of the China Technical Committee members, Shi explained how much ABS values expert input. “Without your participation in the rule development process, ABS would not be able to provide first class services,” he said. “ABS Rules and standards have been developed and refined to be at the forefront of the marine and offshore industries, and ABS GCD Engineering will continue to promote collaborative rule development with local experts.”
ABS has a long history in China. Today, ABS GCD Engineering operates three satellite offices in Dalian, Yantai, and Taipei in addition to its main office in Shanghai to support ABS clients.
