ABS began the week, which was themed around digitalization and smart shipping, by releasing the ABS Guidance Notes on Smart Function Implementation for owners, operators and equipment manufacturers in the marine and offshore industries.

Derek Novak, ABS Senior Vice President – Engineering & Technology joined technology innovators in the Smart Ports and Smart Carriers Session in discussing the industry’s pathway towards digitalization, and what revolutionary technologies may mean for the future.

ABS sponsored the keynote session on the opening day, a parliamentary-style debate on whether or not the maritime industry was ready to embrace shipping. An audience of approximately 200 watched as two panels of three prominent opinion-makers, led by Precious Shipping MD, Khalid Hashim and Topaz Energy and Marine CEO, Rene Kofod-Olsen, argued both sides of the case.

After interventions from the floor a vote among the audience was taken. The result proved incredibly close, with Kofod-Olsen’s team arguing that the industry was ready to embrace smart shipping coming out winner.
