ABS Joint China National & Hong Kong SAR Committee Meeting Successfully Held in Shanghai

The 2014 ABS Joint China National & Hong Kong SAR Committee Meeting was held in Shanghai on 18 September. Tung Chee-Chen, Chairman of Orient Overseas International Ltd.; Steve G. Hsu, Honorary Chairman of Oak Maritime (HK) Inc., Limited; Sun Jia-Kang, Vice President of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co., Ltd.; Li Zhu-Shi, Executive Vice President of China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry; Hu Wei-Ping, Secretary General of China Industrial Overseas Development and Planning Association; were joined by more than 100 senior representatives from leading shipbuilders, shipping enterprises and design institutions on the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.

During the meeting ABS Executive Vice President and COO Tony Nassif, introduced the future direction of classification societies and the role they will play in responding to the challenges of change. He pointed out that ABS will focus on the future according to changing regulations and industry needs, the continuous development and expanded service areas that will further strengthen ABS’ brand in the China market.

Eric Kleess, President and COO of the ABS Greater China Division, focused his comments on development of Greater China. Figures show that ABS has a leading market share in the China marine and offshore markets, especially in high-tech and high value-added fields such as gas carriers and high-end offshore projects. ABS has been increasing its surveying and engineering resources in China to provide active design development support to shipyards for a broad range of ship types.

As the guest speaker invited by ABS, Secretary General of China Industrial Overseas Development and Planning Association Hu Wei-Ping delivered a speech titled “Analysis of the Domestic/Overseas LNG Market and Shipping Development”. He suggested promoting the development of regulations for LNG fueled ship and bunkering and encouraging the use of new technology for LNG transportation and storage, including container type LNG storage tank and LNG tankers.

Howard Fireman, ABS Senior Vice President of Asset Performance Management, Ah-Kuan Seah, Director of ABS Operational and Environmental Performance and Peter Tang-Jensen, Senior Advisor of ABS, delivered speeches on key topics, including asset performance management, regulatory updates and containership trends, all of which sparked great interest and enthusiastic discussions from attendees.
