FPSO Forum Facilitates Technology Development

The ABS-sponsored FPSO Forum JIP Week, held in Houston in October 2015, brought together regulatory agencies, operators, class societies, fabricators, owners and designers in the industry in a forum at which organizations proposed joint industry projects (JIPs). Sessions during this event allowed participants to discuss technical issues in designing, fabricating and operating FPSOs.

Keynote speakers included ABS Senior Vice President & Chief Technology Officer Howard Fireman; Dr. Robert Seah, Floating Systems Advisor at Chevron; and Andrew Newport, Technology Director at SBM Offshore.

Fireman presented a number of challenges, pointing out that we are navigating through a demanding time in our industry. “In this environment this type of forum is a strategic investment, providing a place to talk about the future and where we see the industry going; to identify opportunities and to collaborate and share ideas. These types of discussions will lay the foundation for innovation and will help move our industry forward,” Fireman said.

ABS presented two JIP proposals during Wednesday’s session. The first of the JIPs focused on Electrical System Fault Tolerance and Equipment Condition Monitoring presented by Senior Managing Principal Engineer from ABS Offshore Technology, Milton Korn (in cooperation with Florida State University, HVPD, The National Technical University of Athens, Various Asset Partners, Industry Stakeholders and flag States). The other JIP, presented by Chief Scientist from ABS Technology, Richard Korpus (in cooperation with BV and DNV GL), will address green water on FPSO Deck Areas. David Hua, Director of Offshore and Marine Services for ABS Group, also presented a JIP proposal and participated in a presentation on the “Demand for Life Extension” as a Life Extension panelist.

Through events like the FPSO Forum JIP Week, industry leaders with direct FPSO experience have the opportunity to discuss critical challenges and form partnerships that lead to innovative solutions that will benefit the entire industry.
