Leveraging Big Data to Manage Intelligent, Next-Generation Systems

The increased complexity of deepwater vessel systems – from onboard cranes with active heave compensation capability to the telemetry and dynamic positioning systems that guide these massive vessels – creates both advantages and challenges for the industry. While these intelligent systems increase the offshore industry’s ability to find and develop new deepwater frontiers, the systems themselves must be mastered, monitored and maintained. 

Success in this area can increase the reliability and operability of these high-spec vessels. Even more significantly, harnessing the masses of data they generate can provide new insights that can deliver substantial returns in future performance improvements. To support the industry in capturing the full value of these intelligent systems, ABS is developing new resources. These range from providing equipment training courses to classing drilling equipment with a notation that addresses software quality to evolving an overall big-data-driven approach to classification.

The ultimate goal of all these efforts is to leverage intelligent systems and their data to make better-informed decisions that take the offshore industry even further.
