Middle East Clients Benefit from ABS Insight on OSVs

The rapid changes in the offshore support vessel (OSV) market have left stakeholders in this segment with a lot of questions.

On 20 October 2014, ABS hosted an OSV seminar in Dubai, UAE, to discuss new-generation OSVs and how this market sector is evolving. This seminar was the second in a series of ABS-hosted OSV seminars held throughout the region to guide ABS clients through current market trends, introduce recent research and technology developments in the market, explain the implications of new regulations, discuss OSV software and outline enhanced notations for OSVs.

More than 50 clients attended the Dubai event. The first session of the afternoon, presented by Mike Sano, Manager for ABS Energy Development, OSVs, focused on a range of current topics related to OSVs which included the makeup of the world’s OSV fleet; current subsea trends; dynamic positioning notations; considerations for LNG as fuel; regulatory updates on the SPS Code and considerations for MARPOL Annex IV.  Sano also highlighted some considerations for multi-functional OSVs and operations in harsh environments.

Guest Speaker, David Manuel from IHS Petrodata shed light on the OSV market outlook in the Middle East, while ABS Chief Engineer Panos Panagopulos presented notations for specialized services, including CCO, DPS-1, 2, 3, ENVIRO and HAB(WB).

Dr. Yuka Tamura, Senior Engineer at ABS, working with the Singapore Innovation and Research Center, highlighted the new IMO Code on noise on board ships, pointing to the positive results of the Code, which include better habitability, improved crew safety, greater productivity, higher morale and better crew performance.

Ahmad Sarthy, ABS Director of Offshore Technology and Business Development, based in Singapore, provided an overview of ABS software, which was developed to assist clients in maintaining consistencies and accuracy in the application of the ABS OSV Rules.

Pedro Santos, Manager of Marine Services for ABS Group, presented an overview of ABS Group’s cyber security assessment programs and services.

Participants left the event with a better understanding of what constitutes a very dynamic market sector. “I want to take a moment to thank ABS for organizing this seminar,” said Mohamed Suliman, Projects Manager at ESNAAD - ADNOC GROUP. “You did a superb job organizing it. The topics were thought provoking and have a direct impact on the OSV market.”
