Industry Leaders in Brazil

Our position as the leading class society for offshore production units has created significant opportunities in Brazil where pre-salt discoveries continue to drive offshore exploration.  The large accumulations and the excellent quality of the oil makes this province the most important exploration play in the world and requires specialized expertise.

With an extensive team of engineers and surveyors in strategic locations across Brazil, ABS has the knowledge and unique expertise to support floating production operations in this area.

Most of the floating production units operating in Brazil are built to ABS class, including the majority of the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSOs) units and the country’s first tension-leg platform (TLP).

Driving Innovation

Since the Classification of the first offshore drilling unit built in Brazil (Self-elevating Drilling Unit P-1) in 1968, ABS has been supporting the multiple challenges of moving Brazil offshore exploration from shallow waters to the complex operations in ultra-deep waters. Innovations like “early production systems”, “spread moored FPSOs”, “innovative mooring devices”, were challenges that ABS Brazil Engineers addressed as industry evolved.

Understanding Brazil Regulations

With our legacy in classing offshore production units operating in Brazil, ABS has built a close working relationship with Brazil Regulatory Authorities, including DPC and ANP. We have developed a deep understanding of the wide array and complexity of local regulations, resolutions and standards for operating in Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters, allowing us to help clients understand and successfully apply these standards during the Class process.

ABS offers the BRZ and BRZ+ notations to provide owners, operators, designers, and shipyards with a design and construction-focused approach to help achieve compliance with domestic regulations for Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units and Floating Production Units (FPU) operating in Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters.

BRZ Notation

The BRZ notation covers basic physical requirements to be implemented in the design and construction stages of the floating facility project.

BRZ+ Notation

The BRZ+ notation expands the coverage of requirements and includes a significant larger coverage of regulations from different agencies to better assist clients in the project development phase.
