Decarbonization remains the focal point of the maritime industry, with stakeholders across the value chain doing their part to ensure the IMO’s 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets are achieved. As a leader in sustainability for the maritime industry ABS continues to assist clients with achieving their decarbonization targets. Being able to track the environmental performance and ultimately the environmental impact of a vessel is a key element of reducing emissions.

As part of the Clean Shipping Index’s (CSI) process for obtaining certification, ABS can provide third-party verification in accordance with CSI guidelines and verification procedures, allowing ship owners to take advantage of Port and Fairway benefits. Let us assist you today.

What is CSI?

Clean Shipping Index is a non-profit organization that provides key stakeholders within the maritime value chain with the information needed to make environmentally sound decisions.  CSI’s environmental labeling system also allows for eco-friendly ship owners to differentiate themselves among their competitors as well as take advantage of ports who provide incentives for vessels with lower emissions.

CSI provides key players within the maritime supply chain with the information needed to make decisions that are environmentally responsible. Ship owners register their vessels in the CSI database by completing the CSI’s environmental performance questionnaire (“self-assessment”) which is free of charge. Once a vessel is registered in the CSI database, it receives a CSI Class of 1-5 based on environmental performance parameters outlined by CSI.

What are the benefits?

In order to obtain CSI’s vessel certification which may allow for access to the benefits listed below, third-party verification of the self-assessed environmental performance data in the questionnaire must be performed.

  • Reduced fairway dues in Sweden
  • Reduced port fees in various countries
  • CSI performance label which differentiates your vessel from competitors

Port fees and fairway dues reductions are determined based on the CSI Class (1-5) provided by CSI.  For further information regarding reduction amounts and participating ports, please visit CSI's website.

How can ABS assist?

As part of CSI’s process for obtaining certification, ABS can provide third-party verification in accordance with the Clean Shipping Index guidelines and verification procedures.
