ABS Greater China Division Provides Chemical Tanker Training

Chemical Tanker Training GCD

With the increasing demand for chemical tankers in China last year, the Chinese marine industry has begun paying more attention to this market segment. To respond to inquiries requesting specialized training courses, the ABS Greater China Division (GCD) developed and hosted a Chemical Tanker Training session to provide a technical and operational overview for  clients.

ABS GCD Operations Technical Advisor Captain Stein Nilsen, a 34-year industry veteran led the one-day course. Training  covered a wide range of subjects, including chemical cargo, chemical ships, ship arrangement, hull design and construction, fire safety, cargo handling, ship-shore interface, risk management, and personnel health and safety.

“It is essential for owners, designers, and shipbuilders to understand the typical characteristics of common chemical cargoes and the ships that carry chemicals and their associated systems,” Captain Stein says. “Especially in the chemical tanker shipping sector, the need to maintain skills and to be aware of the hazards and risks during shipping and handling is critical to the safety of the vessel, cargo, crew and environment.”

The inaugural GCD Chemical Tanker Training course attracted 36 representatives from owners, designers, and shipbuilders in mainland China.“This tailored training brought to the classroom an invaluable blend of technical knowledge and operational insight drawn from ABS’ extensive experience in the tanker segment,” says Hasan Turkmen, ABS Shanghai Training Center Manager, who supported the development of this course. “The Shanghai Training Center also offers this specialized course as private training
