ABS Hosts Live Webinar on Global Sulphur Cap 2020

On Feb. 28, ABS Singapore hosted live webinar on Global Sulphur Cap 2020 with presenter, Quiam Choudhury, Senior Principal Engineer from ABS Corporate office in Houston. During the webinar, Quaim introduced the requirements of different SOx emissions standards, compliance options and effective fuel strategy followed by technical details of various low sulphur fuels and exhaust gas scrubber systems. Quiam also provided answers and clarifications to many questions posted by the attendees after his presentation.

At the recent IMO MEPC70 (Marine Environmental Protection Committee) meeting, member states agreed to retain the current text of MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 14.1.3. This means, from January 1 2020, ships will have to use fuel with sulphur content not exceeding 0.5% m/m or to use equivalent alternative technology such as an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS).

However, shipowners and operators are concerned about the cost of implementing these methods.

With regulatory compliance challenges from the upcoming regulations, owners and operators are looking for practical solutions that are suitable to their vessels’ unique operating profile. To respond to this need, the ABS webinar presented the ABS Exhaust Gas Cleaning System Technology Evaluation Service and ABS Techno-economic Modelling Service. The ABS technology evaluation service is an interactive, multi-phase assessment to assist owners and operators in identifying the best option during the complex selection process. The ABS techno-economic modelling evaluates both the technical and commercial aspects of identified compliance options and helps owners and operators make their decisions.

After the live webinar, ABS representatives followed up with clients to address their specific inquiries and provide continuous support to help the industry to most appropriately implement the upcoming regulations.
