ABS Executive Provides Insight on Industry Challenges at the 2016 World Shipping Summit

ABS Executive Vice President Dr. Kirsi Tikka recently participated in a panel discussion at the 2016 World Shipping Summit in Shanghai, China where she shared her views on the future of the industry and the challenges that lie ahead.

“ABS plays a fundamental role in helping move sustainably toward an industry that is smarter and safer,” Tikka said. “As a trusted technical advisor, ABS is taking on the challenges introduced by dramatic changes in the maritime industry, providing both timely support and industry-leading guidance.”

Tikka spoke about regulatory drivers and their impact on the shipping industry, explaining how rapid changes are posing hurdles. “Owners, operators and designers often are left guessing as to what measures will both comply with the regulations and address their unique circumstances. The combination of the downturn in shipping markets, slow economic growth and the complexity and uncertainty of the environmental regulatory framework challenge the industry to find sustainable solutions.”

The World Shipping Summit, organized by China COSCO Shipping, has become one of the top industry conferences in China, providing a high-level platform for discussing the new role of shipping in a rapidly changing environment. This year’s theme “Co-building New Shipping Ecology,” drew the interest of hundreds of global professionals and influential leaders from the maritime industry.
