ABS Advanced Solutions held a cyber security workshop for shipping giant, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and its subsidiary, Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI). Senior Engineer Naveen Selvam and Principal Assessor Matt Romero led this workshop, which took place on September 10-12 at the ABS headquarters in Houston, Texas.

The primary objective of this workshop was to provide NYK and MTI with ABS’ practical guidance for tactical cyber security risk management. The workshop participants learned cyber security risk management concepts and methodology. The secondary objective was to develop Safety Management System (SMS) Manual that complies with the upcoming IMO and U.S. Coast Guard cyber security risk management requirements.

This workshop also included instruction on RSAT matrixes and cyber security as an operational risk management challenge. During the workshop, NYK and MTI took part in a network architecture exercise and identified cyber vulnerabilities of which they were not previously aware.

ABS Advanced Solutions Senior Vice President Richard Pride said, “Workshops such as these allow us to share our expertise in maritime cyber security and help clients learn how to protect their assets and operations. We look forward to continuing our relationship with NYK and MTI as they continue to strengthen their cyber security management systems.”

This workshop series with NYK and MTI will continue in Tokyo this November.
