(SEOUL) At HD Hyundai Global Research and Development Center, ABS issued approval in principle (AIP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for its 100 MW-class Barge Mounted Power Plant (BMPP), a floating power-generation concept designed to serve data centers, industrial complexes and other facilities with substantial electricity demand.
Rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) and data center growth, combined with siting and permitting constraints for new land-based power plants, is driving interest in offshore power infrastructure that can be deployed faster and with fewer location challenges. As terrestrial data centers increasingly face similar challenges, floating power infrastructure could be a key enabler for the development of floating data centers.
The design uses medium-speed HiMSEN gas engines to generate electricity offshore, with power transmitted to shore-based users. ABS completed design reviews of the basic concept, electrical single-line diagram and stability assessment, confirming the technical feasibility and regulatory compliance of the concept.
