US EPA Approves No Discharge Zone along Entire Coast of California

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced approval of a proposal by the state of California prohibiting the discharge of all sewage - whether treated or not - from large cruise ships and most other large oceangoing ships in state marine waters and surrounding islands. The new federal regulation, expected to come into effect in March 2012, creates a no discharge zone that extends along the state's entire coastline out to a distance of three nautical miles.
