Vessel Gangway Inspection, Maintenance and Operational Safety

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has issued a Marine Safety Alert regarding vessel gangway inspection, maintenance and operational safety.

During passenger disembarkation from an inspected passenger vessel, a gangway connection point suffered a catastrophic failure. The gangway separated from the vessel and fell, resulting in severe injuries and loss of life. Investigations into similar casualties point to a dangerous lack of gangway inspection, maintenance and operational safety.

The USCG strongly recommends that vessel owners and operators implement practical precautions to ensure the safe operation of gangways. The details of the USCG recommendations are outlined in the Marine Safety Alert 14-26.
